The exhibition only opened on Wednesday so filled with many arty tourists/students, but find a peaceful day I promise you will find the illustrations captivating.
Gruau created some of the most recognizable, enduring fashion images of the 20th century. His iconic illustrations defined an era, capturing a new mood of modernity and optimism. His bold lines and fluid style, daring use of negative space set 'new' graphic style and influenced a great generation. Together with Christian Dior, G created a fresh ideal of feminine beauty. The exhibition looks at the special relationship between Gruau and Dior. In February 1947 Dior launched 'The New Look' and turned to his friend of years to work on illustration. Even after his death Gruau continued to work for the house until he passed in 2004.
It has been displayed in Sommerset House, enter at the embankment entrance (it's much quicker). The exhibition is relatively quick to get through and Im a firm believer in leaving once your mission is complete, otherwise you don't appreciate it all nearly as much. Next one on my task is Matthew Williamson's photograph's of time. I had a quick sneak preview and it looks goooood!
